A scientific expedition returning from South America brings home to Belgium the ancient mummy of the great Inca Rascar Capac. Soon, the expedition members, one by one, fall into a lethargic sleep. According to experts, the reason for this may be a certain substance, traces of which are present on fragments of crystal balls, which are found over and over again near the victims. In the clinic where the victims of a strange epidemic are being taken, a new intriguing detail becomes known: every day at the same time, all seven fall into a deep trance. Did someone decide to punish those who dared to desecrate the tomb of the Inca ruler? Tintin takes up the investigation, but Professor Tournesol disappears. The search leads Tintin and Captain Haddock to France. In the port, they find the professor's hat. Tintin suggests that the professor was kidnapped and taken aboard the cargo ship Pachacamac, which had just sailed for the Peruvian port of Callao. Tintin and the captain urgently fly there.
The format of the dilogy, tested by the “pirate” story (“The Secret of the Unicorn” and “The Treasure of the Red Rakkam”), turned out to be so successful that the next “Indian” adventure of Tintin (“7 crystal balls” and “Temple of the Sun”) Hergé also decided to make two-volume. In the Russian edition, both parts are marked with orange spines for convenience.
