Guy de Maupassant was and remains one of the most widely read and loved French authors. Many generations of readers discovered the world of forbidden erotica through his works. "Dear Friend", where the career story of the mediocre seducer and life-burner Georges Duroy, developing in the spirit of an adventurous novel, became a symbolic reflection of the spiritual impoverishment of the hero and society. The interest of cinema speaks best of all about the enduring relevance of the novel: there are at least a dozen and a half of its adaptations. The novel "Life", which L. N. Tolstoy assessed as "almost the best French novel since Hugo's Les Miserables," tells about lost illusions. An example of unsurpassed psychologism and literary skill are numerous short stories by Maupassant, starting with the famous "Dumpling". The writer's work is characterized by a strict internal artistic logic, conciseness, accuracy and clarity of the "truly French language" (A. France).
