This is the fifth book in the famous autobiographical epic by American writer Laura Ingles Wilder. It describes without embellishment the childhood of Almanzo Wilder, the future husband of the writer. Little Almanzo's days are filled with hard physical labor rather than carefree fun and boyish adventures. But the boy is not at all worried about this. Hard-working and inquisitive, Almanzo is a born farmer, although he is not yet 10 years old. He knows how to do almost everything that adults do: harness bulls and carry logs on them, milk a cow, churn butter, shear sheep, take care of crops. The main thing is that these "adult" duties do not burden him. Almanzo fulfills them as a matter of course and even with pleasure, and even manages to study at school. The book is reminiscent of a vividly written encyclopedia of the life of American farmers, easy to read, with unflagging interest, and conducive to reflection on work and idleness and the comparison of times and customs. It will be interesting for teenagers 12-14 years old.
