Johann Wolfgang Goethe is a great German poet, thinker and public figure, the ruler of the thoughts of his time. Goethe spent almost sixty years creating this iconic philosophical work. Doctor Johann Faustus was a German alchemist of the first half of the 16th century, whose fame as a “great warlock” was so grandiose that popular rumor created a bizarre legend about him. This legend became part of European folklore and inspired many writers, both Renaissance and modern, but none of them managed to rise to the heights of Goethe. “I am part of that force that always wants evil and always does good”...
God considered him one of his best creations - a faithful and active slave. Mephistopheles decided to prove the opposite. The devil believed that even the most devoted person could be forced to embrace darkness. Good and evil argued and began a great battle for the human soul. The battlefield became the brilliant professor Faust, who that evening decided to complete his mortal journey...
Goethe's Faust is not just a man who sold his soul to the devil (although the writer completely preserved almost all the plot features of the legend), but a great scientist , an intellectual and humanist who dreams of the happiness of all mankind and tirelessly seeks ways to achieve it. He doubts, makes mistakes, suffers failures, but continues his ascetic work.
"Faust" is a work that Goethe wrote almost all his life, with all its complexity, diversity, with all the fact that ancient myths were reflected in it , and German folklore, and philosophical ideas of different times, and biblical stories - amazingly fascinating reading.
And the modern reader, delving into “Faust” and thinking about the meaning of life and even the fate of all humanity, will definitely not be bored. This volume presents his most famous works: the tragedy “Faust”, the novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther”, the epic poem “Herman and Dorothea”, as well as selected poems. All works are accompanied by illustrations by 19th-century German artists Richard Brendamour and Franz Xaver Zim.
